And what used to be "Nightmare" to the left of it. Arties was at the bottom of a staircase running down from the street and hosted some crazy heavy metal parties in the early 1990's. It was one of the first pubs I visited in Cape Town, catching the train in the late afternoon with friends and walking around the Golden Acre (supper at the Wimpy) and then watch "V.O.D." "Ravenwolf" and "Retribution Denied" live. Black Label beer was R2.50 and on off nights we played pool with hookers. Arties had the same crowd as The Playground but was a little rawer and less commercial. After a while they opened another, larger club called Nightmare which was on the first level of this building. I remember bright umbrellas hanging from the ceiling and a larger dance floor but it never did well. This club was the center of the old metal scene and preceded clubs like Hell, The Fringe , Springfield and The Stage.
